My theory for why everything went from being detailed looking to flat between 2012 and 2013 was because UI designers suddenly realized they had to support phone / tablet screens along with regular computer screens, and the easiest immediate way to make interfaces responsive was to go visually minimalist. After most websites, apps, and Windows 8 went with flat design, then every other medium picked up on it because they felt like they had to.

i wonder how design went from realistic skeumorphism to insanely flat design that look so boring. obv when we look back at it, it feels less boring than at the time where we took it kinda for granted? i wonder if i can manage to make my own theme for kde plasma. i want to check out the svgs and see if i can recreate the feeling
